AI and creative thinking

Updated: Oct 17, 2020

The thought about Artificial Intelligence being able to be creative can be unsettling.

It might seem, with machine learning and AI, that computers can think creatively and critically. We see machines taking decisions and perform complex market trading. We see artwork made by machine sold for over 400,000 USD.

But are computers creative?

To answer this question, we first need to look at what creativity is. Creativity is the ability to come up with unique and valuable solutions for problems.

Therefore, looking at AI, we need to explore these questions:

1. Can a machine imagine original ideas to solve problems?

2. Can a machine think critically and decide what is a valuable solution?

In order to imagine new ideas, we need to step away from the known. We need to imagine the non-existing. Can a machine, who is built on algorithms (Even very complex ones) and is fed data from what exists in our world, can break free from its mechanism and imagine?

Can a machine really understand the value different ideas bring to humans? (beyond numbers and quantified data)

Machine learning and creative thinking. Artificial intelligence and creative thinking. 21st century skills
Can machines think creatively?

Can a machine understand the value of joy and laughter?

Looking at how humans imagine and evaluate, do you think the same thing can be done by a machine?
